In order to grow, we need to grieve what we've lost- but we also need to grieve things we wish we had. When life robs us of the fulfillment of dreams it can challenge our ideas of who we are. Jesus invites us to mourn, so that we may be comforted. Only when we acknowledge and validate our real griefs, can we truly surrender them to the Lord, and ask for his help and healing.

Just as the Wise Men bowed before Christ's kingship, thwarting the wills of earthly kings, so we, too, must be wise and bow before God's authorship of His story and our own.

Jesus was born into the world, and endured the cross "for the Joy" that was set before him, Hebrews tells us. What could possibly be a joy worth that pain? You are. Christmas reminds us, we are God's joy.
